Xerox Launches `Invisible Print Marks' and Tools to Help Production Printing Operations Improve Services

    (excerpt) ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 2002--

New Printing Capabilities Announced at International Conference

Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today announced three new tools to help data centers and other printing operations add value to documents, leverage existing technology investments and improve overall operational efficiency and profitability.

Xerox has introduced its Invisible Control Marks solution, which uses an invisible ink bar code that eliminates the eyesore of bar codes without sacrificing the automated controls they provide for how documents such as insurance policies or financial statements are printed, packed and shipped. ICM is the only solution available today that can print bar codes anywhere, even directly over text, on any standard cut-sheet paper.

The Invisible Control Marks solution is one of Xerox's high-end printing and publishing systems and solutions being shown at Xplor International, a leading electronic document systems association, at the group's 23rd Global Conference & Exhibit at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Xerox is providing the tools and techniques that will make it easier for data centers and other printing operations to go beyond traditional printing to build more profitable businesses and improve their range of services. In a keynote speech to hundreds of attendees yesterday, Anshoo S. Gupta, president, Xerox Production Systems Group, challenged Xplor members to find ways to cut costs within their operations, build revenue and improve customer service.

"Today we face difficult times, yet great new opportunities are on the horizon. If you do not produce effective, high-value documents in the most efficient and cost-effective ways, your operation may be at risk," Gupta said. "Printing is destined to become a commodity if you don't add value beyond marks on paper."

To address this challenge, Xerox is not only launching new products but also helping data centers and other print operations to develop new processes that use existing equipment and software investments more effectively. Xerox currently boasts the industry's widest array of software workflow products and today announced enhancements to DocuSP, Xerox's print management software that processes print files and drives printers and digital presses.

The latest version of the software, DocuSP 3.6, provides a common workflow platform for 26 Xerox production printers. It also enables print, accounting and IT managers to monitor and manage Xerox equipment -- from billing issues to supplies reordering -- from any location with a PC and a Web connection. These improvements will help printing operations reduce training costs and increase the overall efficiency of their staff.

Xerox also has improved its DocuPrint and DocuTech production printing systems to process more data streams, or varieties of computer data that describe a print job. This added functionality gives printing operations more opportunities to take on different types of printing jobs.

For example, the Xerox DocuTech line was designed to publish applications such as books and manuals, and relies on Postscript and PDF data streams. The DocuPrint line is geared for transaction printing and uses LCDS and Metacode data to print invoices, statements and checks. Now, printing operations can do both publishing and transaction printing, on one machine. Xerox has added LCDS data stream capability to its DocuTech 6100 family to give customers more printing flexibility.
